Chicago Tribune reporter John Walker shared his New Year's Resolution for 2018 is to read more. In his article here he outlines his intention but with some caveats. Interestingly, he plans to read half of his books from authors whose ethnicity is not his own. He has been trying to see history from authors with world views that he did not grow up experiencing. If you only read of the Vietnam conflict from an American perspective, can you understand the entire conflict or only half?
Jessica Roy of the LA Times shares: “Read more books. In fact, think of it less as a resolution, and more as a belated holiday gift to yourself.”
In their annual feature: 30 highly successful people share their New Year's resolutions -- Business insider shares: LearnVest.com CEO and founder Alexa von Tobel hopes to focus on finding time to read more books, among other things.
Most of the resolutions to spend time reading more are upbeat and fun. Not all are. In November of 2017 the Irish Times carried a story with powerful and sad resolution from a father. Benji Bennett lost his young son to an undiagnosed brain tumor. He urges people to spend at least ten minutes a day reading with their children. He shares: ”At the very moment when Adam’s heart took its last beat, I kissed him, a kiss that I knew had to last for eternity. It was exactly at that moment I realised how lucky we were that we had told Adam we loved him every single day. Truly grateful that I had the opportunity to pack a lifetime of love, laughter and fun into his four short years, I immediately felt an overwhelming need to share with parents the importance of spending time reading with their children, stimulating their senses with nature and telling them they are loved every day.”
