In 1924 Macy's hosted their first Thanksgiving day Parade to a crowd of 250,000. It was in NYC at their flagship store where local bands, clowns, and celebrities competed for attention with the crowd favorites: animals borrowed from the local zoo. Within a few years the crowds swelled to over a million, Goodyear made huge balloon floats that replaced the live animals, TV entered the picture and the parade today is viewed by more than 44,000,000 people. It is a long standing American tradition and the start of the Holiday Season.
SmartKidzClub.com has selected for its Editor's Pick a book that shares this parade adventure from the eyes of a young boy off to the Big Apple to take in all its wonder. Titled, Daniel's Day at the Thanksgiving Parade by Written by Meagan J. Meehan, this book takes you from his planning, to the city, the wait, the crowds, the floats, the music, Santa Clause, and the dinner at the grandparents home to follow. It is very well done and gets kids into the whole experience, it also does more than entertain.
At the end of the story is one of SmartKidzClub.com's most interesting playtime activity. It is called Image Sequencing. It has pictures with a minimum text caption and the goal is to arrange it sequentially from the story. It is training the kids mind or reading comprehension, identifying data and grouping it to type, arranging the story from segments, rebuilding it. What is that helpful for? Image Sequencing is essential to programming. Take your iPhone and in looking at the photos, select all photos and you see the phone breaking down the pictures taken by location, activity, date, anything that allows the photos to be grouped in sets so they are not an endless stream. It does image sequencing for you so that you can better enjoy the pictures later. While your kids are having fun reading, get them also on the road to developing important skills. They might one day work at Apple.
