Smart Kidz Club Weekly Newsletter, March 11, 2016

NASA astronaut Scott Kelly completed his one year at the International Space Station and landed on Earth on March 3, 2016. This is the longest stint that any American has ever spent in space. This is a part of a NASA twin study involving his brother Mark Kelly, a retired space astronaut. Researchers are specifically looking at the effects of space radiation, as well as the effect of visual impairment associated with long-duration space flight and because the Kellys have virtually the same genetic material, NASA can study how long-duration spaceflight affects the body and mind, using Mark as the control. Space can have an effect on the vision, bones and muscles, heart, and the body. Scott returned 2 inches taller from space but has now shrunk to his normal height due to earth's gravity.

Check out one of our new releases this week, a book about Astronauts.
