January 18, 2016 was Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the United States. This is a federal holiday in the United States when Martin Luther King Jr. is remembered each year. Martin Luther King Jr. was a Baptist minister and a social activist in the African-American civil rights movement in the 1950s. He was inspired by the likes of Mahatma Gandhi and fought for the equality for African Americans, the economically disadvantaged, and victims of injustice through peaceful protest. Martin Luther King Jr. helped bring about landmark legislations such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.

Martin Luther King Jr. was well known for his emphasis on broad education that includes character education and imbibing moral values. According to him "We must remember that intelligence is not enough. Intelligence plus character--that is the goal of true education. The complete education gives one not only power of concentration, but worthy objectives upon which to concentrate. The broad education will, therefore, transmit to one not only the accumulated knowledge of the race but also the accumulated experience of social living."
